December 3 - George Andrews
Matthew 9:35–10:1, 5A, 6-8
Today's Advent reflection is on Matthew 9:35–10:1, 5A, 6-8 from Mr. George Andrews. Today is the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, patron saint of the Xavierian Brothers. Our reading today comes from the Gospel of Mark. He talks about Jesus going around to the towns and villages. Jesus says, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.” Jesus then summons his 12 disciples and gives his disciples authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure disease and every illness. Jesus sent out these 12 after instructing them, “Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, proclaim the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers and drive out demons. Without cost you have received, without cost you are to give.”
This reading is special to me because Brother James Kelly, C.F.X. passed away on this date, December 3, 2011, but not before asking me to come back to The Mount to carry on his work as President. After having been gone from The Mount for 14 years, I returned to a place that had welcomed me in the past, with a sense to carry on the Gospel message and a mission to educate young men in the faith. We have been truly blessed over the last 11 years and today is a special day for me as I give thanks to Brother James Kelly for allowing me this opportunity. It is everyone’s responsibility in the Advent season to carry forth our faith.
