Business Club Externships Provide Exciting Opportunities for Students

Last year, the Business Club recorded a banner enrollment of more than 70 students. In addition to club activities such as drafting resumes, building LinkedIn accounts, and developing elevator pitches, the club also enjoyed hearing from guest speakers on a variety of business fields and topics. Over the summer, 24 students built upon the knowledge and skills learned during the school year by participating in the Business Club’s Externship Program.

The Externship Program places rising seniors with a business in their desired field of study for one-day, unpaid shadow days. Externships allow students to get a firsthand look into the field they plan to study in college to help them determine if it is the right path or to create valuable connections that could lead to internships during college summers. The externships are made possible by alumni, parents, and other friends of The Mount, who generously donate their time and expertise to help students down the path to success.

“I was honored to be chosen by MSJ for an externship at T. Rowe Price,” says Robin Paranilam ’20, who completed his externship with Rajesh Eshwar at the T. Rowe Price Innovation Lab. “The externship introduced me to new people, showed me possible career paths, and exemplified the application of what I learn in school in real world problems. T. Rowe Price’s uniquely designed, night-tech Innovation Lab provides a relaxing, casual, modern space that allows for lot of creativity and cooperation.”

Dominic Snipes ’20 shadowed MSJ graduate Leon Thomas ’85 at the Choice Hotels Headquarters. “During my Externship at Choice Hotels, I learned about the many different skills the employees use in their jobs and what people in the company went through to get to where they are now,” he says. “I also learned how you could use different college majors to get a job within the company. One major thing I learned is that I should be open to change. I should always be ready for different things in life and always try things outside my comfort zone.”

Mike Plano ’20 shadowed another Mount graduate, Nick Barrick ’02 at KCI Technologies. “I really enjoyed my day with KCI Technologies, and I would gladly do something similar again,” Mike says. “I liked the actual designing and modeling of projects. I learned that modeling is a very important part of engineering and that these companies spend thousands of dollars to have access to very accurate models.”

Mike’s father, Brett Plano ’89, also hosted three students for externships at his company Plano-Coudon Inc.

Any alumnus, parent, or friend of The Mount who would like to host a student during the school year or the 2020 summer, please email Business Club moderator Julius Prezelski at jprezels@msjnet.edu. Student interests range from business to a variety of other fields, including finance, accounting, engineering, medicine, science, data analytics, law, and government.
