Mark Reddy '92 - Living and Leading with Purpose

Military service was not on Mark Reddy’s ’92 radar until after he graduated from college and started his first job. He quickly concluded that there had to be more to life than the inside of his cubicle, and his search for a greater purpose led him to join the United States Navy, which he has now actively served in for the last 21 years.

As a lieutenant commander and assistant program manager for the Maritime Surveillance Systems Program Office in San Diego, California, Mark manages several projects in Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence, both nationally and abroad. He has also deployed to the Middle East eight times since the beginning of the Iraq War in 2003, during which he has served as an Anti-Submarine Warfare chief, Surface Warfare officer, and Electronic Materials officer.

Throughout his extensive experience serving in leadership positions, Mark has drawn on lessons he learned as a student at The Mount. “One of the most difficult tenets of leadership is getting people to move in the same direction when there are competing priorities, objectives, and mission sets – even more so when deployed to a war zone,” he explains. “Investing your time and energy in people is the only way to get that done. My understanding of that leadership tenet started at The Mount and has truly served me well over the years.”
Mark recently returned to Mount Saint Joseph for the first time in a while, as his career has made visits difficult over the years. However, when he stepped foot on campus, he felt himself being welcomed back into the brotherhood as if he never left.

He shares, “There is a certain pride in knowing that you've served in our nation's military, in finding and fulfilling your purpose, sharing that bond with your fellow shipmates, and finally, coming home to a family that is proud of who I am and what I do.”

And, his Mount family is certainly proud as well.
