This tournament is open to all students who have applied to the Mount and have listed Mount Saint Joseph as either their first or second choice school. The student ultimately must be accepted by Mount Saint Joseph High School to be considered a valid participant in the tournament.
Students who are interested should write a speech on one of the following topics below, and be prepared to deliver it to a panel of current Mount Saint Joseph faculty members as well as current senior members of the Speech & Debate Team on the day of the competition.
The questions are:
Outside of your family members, whom do you admire the most? Why?
What types of things can you do to emulate that person?
More than just a Messiah, Jesus was also a great prophet and teacher, using
parables and stories to spread his ministry. Choose a parable or teaching of Jesus.
Tell us about it. What message is Jesus trying to convey? What does that message
mean to you? What are you doing to live out that message?
President Jimmy Carter once remarked, “Whether the borders that divide us are
picket fences or national boundaries, we are all neighbors in a global community.”
What can you do to be a better neighbor to others? What can your school do to
be a better neighbor in the community? What can America do to be a better
neighbor on an international level?
The student himself must write the speech and it must be approximately 5 minutes in length. It must be memorized and adhere to the question chosen. Props may not be used. Competitors will be evaluated on the strength of their message and on their ability to convey the emotion of the piece through vocal variations and natural gestures.
Trophies and recognitions will be presented to the top speakers. For the available scholarships, students who place in the top 3 speaker positions receive $1500, $1000, $850 respectively, on a yearly basis, contingent upon their participation on the Speech & Debate Team.
Registration for the tournament will be on a rolling deadline and will closed when space has been filled. Space is limited to the first 25 registrants. Only students who have applied to the Mount as their first or second choice school will be eligible. If you questions about eligibility, please contact Mr. Edward Schultheis, Director of Speech & Debate Program at email@example.com.
